An infrared LED is an electroluminescent diode emitting invisible light in the infrared spectrum (wavelengths above 760 nm).
ApplicationsAmong the numerous applications, infrared LEDs are found in remote control units. They also are used to illuminate scenes for infrared photography and in industrial vision systems.
TechnologiesAs with other types, infrared LEDs emit light when a current passes through the junction. They generally use GaAs or AlGaAs semiconductors.
How to chooseChoice will depend on required output. For high intensity, a surface-mounted device (SMD) bar or matrix of one- to three-watt diodes is best. For lower power, a simple LED bulb is sufficient. Increasing the number of LEDs will increase output.
