An oscillator emits a periodic signal at a precise frequency. The frequency is generally fixed if the device is a component soldered to a circuit. Independent units offer a range of frequencies.
ApplicationsThese devices are used in electronics to generate clock signals, for GPS positioning and in radar and aerospace systems. They also provide data exchange synchronization in communications networks. Femtosecond oscillators are used in pulse lasers.
TechnologiesAn oscillator consists of a resonator and an exciter. Quartz's piezoelectric effect produces very stable clock signal frequencies between one and 100 MHz. The quartz is housed along with the necessary electronic circuitry. It can be temperature compensated (TCXO) or thermostatic (OCXO). Crystal-free pMEMS™ oscillators now offer competition to quartz models.
The VCO oscillator emits a variable and controllable signal. Ceramic resonators can operate at lower frequencies than quartz versions. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators operate beyond 100 MHz, while Gunn diode and cavity hyper-frequency devices go above 10 GHz.
Choice will depend on output signal frequency, thermal phase noise, frequency precision and stability, signal shape and treatment.
